Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Austin Rifle Club?
The Austin Rifle Club, Inc. is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to the shooting sports and the education of America's youth in the areas of shooting and safe gun handling.  Established in 1894 and incorporated in 1928, the Austin Rifle Club has a range and Education building on Littig Road in the town of Manor, TX.  Our membership boasts over 1,500 members.  We are a club!   Members of ARC have unlimited access to our range to shoot as much as they want, and it is also our membership who maintains the range.  If you choose to join the club we ask that you become an involved member who donates time to help insure that we and our children have a safe place to shoot for generations to come.

What is a Prospect Safety Evaluation?
The Prospect Safety Evaluation session is the very first step of the membership process. All applicants for membership must first be evaluated by an ARC member Range Safety Officer to insure prospective members can handle firearms and use the range safely by themselves and in the presence of others.  This is a one-on-one evaluation with you and an ARC RSO.  See "How to Join the Club" for a list of available Safety Evaluation Instructors (our RSOs) and their contact information.

When can I sign up for Range Orientation class?
You may sign up for Range Orientation class only after you have successfully completed a Prospect Safety Evaluation session and have a certificate of successful completion in your possession.  You must bring this certificate with you to Range Orientation class.

Should I mail in my membership application before the Range Orientation class?
NO!  Please hold on to your membership materials and bring them with you to Range Orientation class.

Is Range Orientation Class Ever Canceled?
To date, this has never happened.  We hold Range Orientation on the first Sunday of the month, even if that turns out to be New Years Day, Easter Sunday, Super Bowl Sunday, you name it.  Watch the ARC calendar!  If there is ever a schedule change it will certainly be reflected there.  If a class should ever be canceled we will email all registered students.

Can I include my parents, sibling, or other extended family in a Family Membership?
NO!  The Family membership is designed for a married couple to both join the club as full members at a reduced rate, plus all of their children are included in their membership for a family rate of $150.00.

What does it cost to join the club?
Click here to read about all of the membership options.
Dues are prorated for the first year of membership based upon the month you join.  So, PLEASE do not come to Range Orientation class with your check all filled out unless you know the proper prorated amount.  Add to the prorated dues a $100.00 initiation fee to join the club.  This fee is dedicated to our range expansion fund.

Example: if you join the club in July and have an Associate member your dues to join will be:
$100.00 /12 months in the year * 6 months remaining = $50.00 dues for the primary member for the year
Add $10.00 for the Associate member (Associate and Junior member dues are not prorated)
Add $100.00 for the club initiation fee.
Total to join the club = $160.00 for the remainder of the year.  Next year your dues would be $110.00 for you and your Associate member.

What Special Events Take Up What Ranges, and When?
Always check the ARC calendar before coming to the range if you have a specific place you are interested in shooting.  It's no fun to drive to the range only to find out there is a match where you want to be!  Click Here to see the ARC calendar.  While viewing the ARC calendar click on any individual event to see the Range Venue where the event will be held.

What is Online Voting?
Online Voting is a secure online function enabling the entire membership to take part in large club decisions, even when they are unable to attend discussion meetings such as the club Annual Meeting.  Only current club members have access to online voting.  The only pre-requisite is for each member to register for a user ID here on the club web site.  See the instructions above if you have questions about how to self-register for an ID for the ARC Registered User's Area.  Once you have an ID you can log on and vote if there is a topic to vote on in the members-only online area.

Your vote is entirely your secret.  Once you vote on a topic it is recorded that you did vote to prevent you from voting twice in the same 'election', but your selections are only recorded in the tallies with no way to tell who voted for what.  You do receive an email with your vote selctions so you have a personal record of your own vote.

Where Can I Park at the Range?

  1. When on the south side of the creek at the six shooting bays Ranges "G" through "L" park in the designated parking area "A".  DO NOT drive down the service road which runs along in front of these shooting bays (unless you are disabled) !  If there is insufficient room for parking during a match please park on the north side of the creek (across the bridge) in the grassy area there.
  2. On the north side of the creek at Ranges "A" through "E" you may park right in front of the shooting positions at each range.  It is also OK to park in the grass across the road from each range, but do not drive on the grass (stay on the road until you reach the place you want to park).
